Here’s a story that’s anything, but “watered” down. The city of Hamilton may be considered a “dynasty” or “powerhouse” when it comes to their drinking water. In 2015, Hamilton was awarded the “Best Tasting Tap Water in the World” at the 25th Annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting. This is the second time in five years they have received this honor (previously in 2010). The southwestern Ohio city also received the title of “Ohio’s best tap water” in 2012 and 2014 by the Ohio Section of the American Water Works Association. The international water competition is a blind test, where municipal waters are judged based on taste, appearance, and aroma. The Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting includes samples of water from 19 states, six Canadian provinces, and six foreign countries including Greece, Wales, and South Korea. Hamilton’s water superintendent says the secret to their success is the use of chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant which is harder to maintain and must be produced on site, but clearly works. Hamilton residents are very proud of their city’s water quality. The city even bottles and distributes the tap water for individuals to try outside of Butler County.
