You can’t visit a grocery store, coffee shop, or bar in the fall without being tempted to try a seasonal “pumpkin” flavor. If this is something you look forward to all year round, then you need to make a visit to the Circleville Pumpkin Show. Attracting over 400,000 visitors each October, the Circleville Pumpkin Show is one of the nation’s largest pumpkin-themed festivals. The event is even dubbed, “The Greatest Free Show on Earth”. With over 40 floats, 50 bands, and 7 different parades, the week’s festivities definitely lives up to the hype. In addition to live entertainment, there are several competitions including a pumpkin pie eating contest, a pumpkin toss, the Miss Pumpkin beauty pageant, and the largest pumpkin award. So, how big is the winner of the largest pumpkin award? In recent years, the champions have exceeded the 1,000 pound threshold with the Pumpkin Show record being set in 2009 of 1,635.5 lbs. That would make a scary jack o’ lantern!
Everyone knows that the most important part of any festival is the food. At the Circleville Pumpkin Show you can find almost every possible pumpkin-related cuisine such as pumpkin pie, donuts, burgers, pancakes, waffles, chili, coffee, ice cream, among many others. It’s estimated that there are over 23,000 pumpkin pies and 100,000 donuts sold during the 4-day show (pumpkinshow.com). Since the first pumpkin show was held in 1903, the Circleville Pumpkin Show is considered Ohio’s oldest and largest festival.
