Rated by USA Today as the 2012 best zoo in America, Powell is home to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The zoo features over 600 species of animals across 100 acres of the park. The zoo rose to prominence in 1978 when animal expert and TV personality Jungle Jack Hanna took over as director of the zoo. During his tenure as director, the zoo attendance rose by 400%. Today, the zoo includes approximately 7,000 animal inhabitants throughout 7 regional themed exhibits including: North America, Polar Frontier, Asia Quest, Pachyderms, African Forest, Australia and the Islands, and the Shores. The Columbus Zoo is well reputable due to the high quality and wildlife-like inhabitant conditions.
