The Cleveland Browns have recently struggled in their season openers, losing 10 consecutive games to start the season. While their current streak is not something to be proud of, their 1970 season opening victory against the New York Jets can be considered a historic game for the NFL. On September 21, 1970, the Browns were featured in the first installment of ABC’s “Monday Night Football”. Not only was it the first televised Monday Night Football game, but it was the spotlight game for the first week of the 1970 post-merger (NFL and AFL) season. The Browns were considered a powerhouse NFL franchise, coming off two consecutive NFL Championship game appearances and the Jets were an elite team from the American Football League. The Browns defeated Joe Namath and the Jets at Cleveland Municipal Stadium 31-21. The ABC announcers included legends such as Keith Jackson, Howard Cosell, and Don Meredith.
