First Summer School

While it’s certainly not a “win” for students that are required to participate in summer school, it is for those that want to continue their education and complete necessary classes during the warmer months. The idea of summer school was unheard of until Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio became the first university in the United States to offer summer classes. Due to the belief that the national student’s education levels were not up to the standards and benchmarks set by the university, Mount Union decided to hold summer classes for college students to take additional classes or relearn materials from the prior year. Mount Union has offered a summer term for students each year since its initial program in 1870.
