Nothing is more American than baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and Findlay, Ohio. There aren’t too many other cities which have showcased what it means to be American more than Findlay, nicknamed “Flag City, USA”. The name dates back to the 1960′s, when Findlay resident, John B. Cooke, started a campaign to have every house in Findlay display an American flag on Flag Day. With the help of the Sons of the American Revolution, Cooke established a fund to purchase a replica of the American flag for each house in the city. On June 14, 1968, over 14,000 flags were distributed. The town became known as the flag capital of the United States. The tradition of flying American flags on flag day continued each year. The efforts gained national attention in 1974 when U.S. Congressman, Tennyson Guyer, formally declared Findlay as Flag City, USA. American flags are still prominently displayed in the city today.
