Ohio has produced some legendary football players. It turns out that many of the great personalities off the field are also proud to call the Buckeye state home. These famous sportscasters include:
Cris was born in Dayton in 1959 however moved with family to Florida at a young age. Collinsworth moved back to Southwestern Ohio when he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals. He played for the Bengals for all eight seasons of his NFL career. Upon retirement from the NFL, he began his broadcasting career as a sports radio talk show host on Cincinnati’s WLW. He also earned a law degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1991. Today, Cris is the host of NBC’s Sunday Night Football.
Dan was born in Zanesville, Ohio however was raised in Mason. He attended William Mason High School where he earned AP Class AA All-Ohio honors as a basketball player. He attended Eastern Kentucky University on a basketball scholarship before transferring to the University of Dayton. Upon graduation, Patrick worked as an on-air personality for WTUE Classic Rock Radio in Dayton. He eventually got his big break as an anchor on ESPN’s SportsCenter. Today, Patrick is the host of The Dan Patrick Radio Show, Sports Jeopardy, and NBC’s Football Night in America.
Jon was born in the Sandusky area. As a Northern Ohio native, he grew up a die-hard Cleveland Browns fan. Gruden attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio before transferring to the University Dayton. He was a backup quarterback for the Flyers for three years before graduating in 1985. Today, Jon is the host of Jon Gruden’s QB Camp and a color commentator for ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
Ron “Jaws” Jaworski grew up in New York before moving to Youngstown to play quarterback for the Youngstown State Penguins. He had an impressive college career which ultimately landed him in the Youngstown State Sports Hall of Fame. Today, Jaws is part of the ESPN broadcasting team and a commentator for Monday Night Football.
Howard was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned All-American and All-Ohio honors as a running back at St. Joseph High School in Cleveland. He broke his high school rushing record, accumulating over 5,300 yards during his senior season. No one really remembers what happened to Desmond between graduation from high school and his impressive NFL career. Today, he is an analyst for ESPN College Gameday.
Herbstreit was born and raised in Centerville, Ohio. He graduated from Centerville High School, where he was the star quarterback, earning several state honors and awards. He attended the Ohio State University and started as quarterback during his senior season. He graduated from Ohio State in 1993 with a degree is Business Administration. Today, Kirk is an analyst for ESPN’s College GameDay.
Joey grew up in Bellaire, Ohio and played football at Bellaire High School. Like Herbstreit, Galloway played college football for the Buckeyes where he earned several honors and was among the top of the school’s receiving records. He still resides in Columbus today when he is not travelling as a broadcaster for ESPN’s College Football coverage.
