Hallmark may be synonymous with holiday greeting cards, however the oldest greeting card company in the United States is Cincinnati’s own, Gibson Greetings. In 1850, the Gibson family emigrated to the United States from Scotland with a small lithography press. The family ended up in Cincinnati and started printing bonds, stock certificates, and business cards. During the 1870′s, the Gibson’s, began importing Christmas cards from Germany and sold them in the Cincinnati area. They found that these greeting cards were extremely popular and decided to develop their own line of holiday greeting cards. The company developed the first American line of greeting cards for Christmas, New Years, and Valentines Day. The Gibson holiday greeting cards gained extreme popularity and soon these creative phrased cards were a national phenomenon. In 1999, the company was acquired by Cleveland’s American Greetings, merging the 2nd and 3rd largest greeting card companies in the United States.
