No brand is more associated with jelly and food spreads than Smucker’s. The jam, ice cream topping, and peanut butter king is proud to call Ohio home. The J.M. Smucker Company was founded in 1897 by Jerome Smucker in Orrville, Ohio. Most of Smucker’s life was spent as a farmer and in 1897, Jerome established a cider mill, pressing apples planted in the early nineteenth century by the legendary Johnny Appleseed.  To fight against the seasonality of apple cider, Smucker also produced apple butter in the winters. Jerome would sell his products out of the back of a horse-drawn wagon throughout the Northeast Ohio area. His brand and company continued to grow and by 1921, they were offering a full line of jams and jellies. By the 1970′s the company had become one of the world’s largest “food spread” companies. Over the years, the J.M. Smucker Company has acquired other well known food brands including Jif peanut butter, Pillsbury, and Folgers Coffee. The company is still headquartered in Orrville, Ohio today.
